If you’re part of the repressed gay culture in South Africa of the ‘80s and ‘90s, you’re sure to know, and have (illegal at the time!) copies of the bulging, button-popping illustrations of musclebound men drawn by Tom of Finland. Touko Valio Laaksonen started drawing oversized men with pants so swollen, a wedding cake could fit in there. He gave a voice and much appreciated fantasies and satisfaction to a generation of frustrated men. The film is quite serious, often slow-moving but always true to the tortured soul of a man who broke boundaries with his sketches.
