Without a doubt one of South Africa’s favourite cars, the Volkswagen Polo, has come back as a new car in its sixth generation.

It is longer and lower in height while also being larger on the inside without a bodyweight increase. The new Polo also resembles its more expensive brother the Golf a lot more while bragging with a much more masculine and sporty look than before.

The Highline comes with some nice trimmings such as the beautiful deep iron metallic dashpad that departs entirely from the previous design and the impressive new generation Active Info Display that is combined with an 8-inch touchscreen, forming a modern, glass-encased functional unit. The infotainment is everything you can dream of (which for me always includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and it is user-friendly with a sound system that will keep a smile on your face. There are also slots for SD, CD, USB (two of those), and the normal 12V socket.

I am not a huge fan of the fabric seats and the hard plastics on the door trimmings, but at the same time the soft dash, leather steering wheel, and ambient lighting makes up for it.

I would rate storage bins a five out of ten, but the boot does have more space than before and creates a flat even surface when the rear bench is pushed down. The Polo also has a full size spare wheel under the floor which is always a plus.

My favourite parts of the exterior design are the dominant and sporty headlights with LED technology, as well as the trapezoidal-shaped tail lights.

The Highline DSG has the most powerful engine with 85kW. It includes a wide range of driver assist systems and the driving profile offers four different modes.
If you already love the Polo, this is a great upgrade to make!
