In Elegance Bratton’s deeply moving film inspired by his own story, a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside.

But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the gruelling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life. The movie stars Jeremy Pope as Ellis French in the lead role opposite Gabrielle Union as his homophobic mother Inez, and Bokeem Woodbine and Raúl Castillo as drill sergeants Laws and Rosales, respectively.

Pope made his television debut in Netflix’s Hollywood, a performance that earned him an Emmy®

Award nomination for “Best Actor in a Limited Series,” as well as an African American Film Critics

Association “Breakout Performer” Award. In 2019, Pope made history by earning two acting Tony Award® nominations in the same season.

Gabrielle Union is an actress, producer, best-selling author, and Time100 cover honouree. Union’s film and TV highlights include Cheaper By The Dozen, Think Like A Man, Bad Boys II, Deliver Us From Eva, Love & Basketball, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Bring It On, along with Being Mary Jane and LA’s Finest.

The Inspection starts in select cinemas Friday 17 March 2023.
