Do gay & straight men dream differently at night? New study reveals the answer.
Do gay and straight men have different types of dreams at night? It’s perhaps not a question that’s ever occurred to you. However, it’s something that’s been bugging researchers in Germany.
They’ve recently published a study in the Journal of Homosexuality exploring this specific question.
They say that there’s been barely any research in the past looking at sexual orientation and dreaming. However, as psychologists, they were curious to know if sexual orientation had any bearing on the types of dreams you have. For example, do gay or straight people experience more nightmares? Or erotic dreams?
They quizzed 119 German men, of which 55 were gay and 64 were straight. The men were asked about their sexual history, including how many partners they’d had in the past year, and to complete two dream reports. They were also asked about their recall of dreams and the frequency of specific dreams.
The conclusion? There’s very little difference between gay and straight men when it comes to nocturnal dreams. This is especially true when it comes to nightmares.
The main differences “in dream content were that homosexual men reported more sexual dreams, a higher ratio of male to female dream characters, and more romantic relationships with men.”
