Showcasing contemporary South African artists, vintage treasures, and creative craftsmanship.
A new creative destination is coming to Parkhurst this winter. On Saturday, 7 June 2025, ONYX will officially open its doors at Shop 7, 17 4th Avenue, offering a unique blend of contemporary South African art, vintage and antique objects, and thoughtfully curated interior items — all under one roof. Art is sourced from collectors and auctions, but mainly from working artists.
The gallery has a strong focus on artists who are not currently represented by other galleries, creating an inclusive platform for emerging and independent creatives. In addition to showcasing contemporary work, the space also celebrates timeless craftsmanship with a selection of antique and vintage items from Africa and Asia, and offers a bespoke interior decorating service.
“This is a place where the old and new coexist beautifully in what is a rather small space,” says founder and artist Alan Samons. “We want to make art and objects accessible, and allow people to discover something unexpected — whether it’s a handwoven textile, a one-of-a-kind ceramic, or a restored antique. Prices are affordable and pieces are, as far as possible, ‘car boot friendly’.”
Alan also practises the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi — the mending of broken ceramics with lacquer and gold.
