Activists and community members repainted the rainbow crosswalk outside the old Pulse nightclub over the weekend. The action took place after the Florida Department of Transportation had the crosswalk stripped of its rainbow colors last week.
Under the authority of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and in line with a new ban on “non-compliant pavement surface markings”, state authorities have written to Florida cities in recent weeks demanding they remove rainbow crosswalks. It echoes wider guidance from the Tr*mp administration to remove political messages from roadways.
However, although the likes of Key West and Delray Beach have received letters from the Department giving them a deadline to remove their rainbow crosswalks, city officials in Orlando say they received no such letter or warning. They have roundly denounced the state’s action, which took place sometime on Wednesday night.
Governor Ron DeSantis supported the removal.
