Car buyers are leaning strongly toward automatic gearboxes, especially seeing how much these transmissions have evolved recently.
The XUV 3X0’s six-speed automatic shifts smoothly during fast acceleration or when overtaking at a more sedate pace with the adjustable throttle response. Weighing in under 1400kg with a turbo-triple petrol 1.2T engine that produces 82kW and 200Nm which powers the range’s AX7L flagship that is packed with features. This sub-4m crossover is practical with a high seating position from where there are no blind spots, especially with the cameras that spots everything. A panoramic sunroof adds ambiance to the roomy cabin of the AX7L, while 17-inch diamond-cut alloys, piano-black grille and roof rails ensure that it stands out amongst its more conservative stablemates.
Twin 10.25-inch screens are for the digital cluster and infotainment on a well -designed dashboard. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make linking up simple while wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, a cooled glove box and a Harman-Kardon audio system with a subwoofer is unexpected. Such desirable features usually cost far more. The tactile soft-touch interior competes well with the ugly hard plastics of many rivals and five adults fit comfortably.
Comfortable and compliant ride quality adapts well to any challenging tarmac surfaces. A small turning circle and light steering works well in an urban environment with narrow streets. Due to mainly doing urban driving our fuel consumption of 8,3 l/100km is more than the normal range. The 42-litre tank should give you a 500km plus range.
Lane-keeping assist was very sensitive and took a little time to get used to, but it can be turned off should you prefer. Safety features abound with six airbags and a long list of additional features. I really enjoyed the unusual blind spot safety feature which switches a video feed on when you indicate to change lanes. The 360-degree camera tech is also unusual in this class.
Besides a few minor driving assistances quirks the 3X0 AX7L is my favourite Mahindra being a great car in so many aspects from seat comfort to technology and superb sound. At just over R 400 000 it is hard to beat and stands out amongst its rivals.
There are more powerful rivals that offers less, but I think a car is about everyday practicality, comfort, intelligent design and useful technology. Pricing includes a 5 year/100 km Service Plan.
