More Boyfriend material: Meet the new cast of Netflix’s groundbreaking gay dating show & see their hottest pics!
If you’re worried cuffing season has passed you by, never fear because plenty of boyfriend material is heading to Netflix very soon!
This month, the streamer will unveil the second season of its groundbreaking reality dating show, The Boyfriend, a cozy comfort watch from Japan that’s sure to help you beat those wintertime blues.
Its premise is refreshingly straightforward: eight single queer men from all walks of life move into a gorgeous home together where they’ll live & work, side-by-side, for two months, opening their hearts up to one another along the way to see if the sparks fly.
This time around, their residence (dubbed “The Green Room”) relocates from the beach to the mountains of Hokkaido, where the gorgeously snowy setting means the guys will just have to snuggle up a little closer!
Other than a panel of media personalities (including actress MEGUMI & drag star Durian Lollobrigida) who provide color commentary for the goings-on inside the house, The Boyfriend is proudly gimmick-free. Well, aside for what the season trailer seems to tease is a surprise ninth houseguest… could a fan favorite from Season 1 be making a return???
But what remains the same is that there are no eliminations, no ultimatums, or no consequences for those who don’t successfully partner up by season’s end. The lack of forced stakes means the guys have the space to explore their emotions on their own terms, opening themselves up for a kind of vulnerability & intimacy rarely seen on television.
Its matter-of-fact approach to gay romance feels especially profound in Japan where, despite some signs of gradual progress for LGBTQ+ rights, same-sex unions have yet to be legalized, and out queer celebrities are few & far between. So, just by showing as their authentic selves and letting the world in on their hopes, dreams, and fears, the men of The Boyfriend have a real opportunity to change hearts & minds for the better.
And who are these men, exactly? Well, we’re so glad you asked! Along with the Season 2 trailer drop over the holidays, Netflix also unveiled a first look at the cast.
