Marc Jacobs is pulling back the couture to expose himself in a whole new way.

The 62-year-old fashion designer has been one of the most influential forces in the industry from his early days at Perry Ellis to his more than 15 years as creative director of Louis Vuitton and to his eponymous brand, which he launched more than four decades ago.
Now he’s letting audiences into his more intimate moments as he preps a massive collection in the trailer for the new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola, Marc By Sofia.
Since Jacobs and Coppola are good friends, the film finds the designer being exceptionally candid.
“There was no off limits,” Jacobs previously told The Associated Press. “It was just like come as you are and you get what you get and that’s the way it’s going to be.”
The documentary centers on the hectic weeks leading up to Jacobs’ Spring 2024 runway show, but it also reflects on the designer’s early beginnings prior to the fame and fortune.
Throwback footage highlights his days as a fashion neophyte following his graduation from Parsons School of Design in the 1980s to the debut of his first collections.
The film goes from the vulnerable to the fantastical. We see Jacobs share personal details of how his grandmother was one of his early influences, juxtaposed to supermodel catwalks.
As the stress and pressure of creating luxurious garments mounts, it also finds Jacobs going into moments of deep introspection.
“I just think the idea of transformation and creating this person that you want to be is part of human nature,” the designer says in one voiceover.
Once considered an “enfant terrible” of the industry, it’s clear Jacobs has settled into a more peaceful era of his success. Since 2019, Jacobs has been married to former model Charly Defrancesco.
The doc premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2025 to glowing reviews and is now ready for mass consumption.
After an initial NYC run on March 20, Marc by Sofia hits theaters nationwide March 27.
