VisionQuest star Ruaridh Mollica addresses Tommy’s sexuality

Though Disney and Marvel have been promising openly queer characters for damn near two decades, one Marvel actor feels open-minded about his portrayal about a new character.

Ahead of the premiere of Marvel’s VisionQuest, actor Ruaridh Mollica spoke with SFX Magazine. While Mollica, who will play the adult version of Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s son Tommy, isn’t sure if his character will be outwardly LGBTQ+, he believes his own queerness will be reflected through his portrayal.

“I don’t know if it’s explicitly referenced,” Mollica said, “but I feel like myself as a bisexual actor embodying Tommy, hopefully that comes through in just personality and self and is something that can be explored in the future.”

Speaking of bisexual superheros, some fans are looking forward to seeing how Marvel handles another superhero ensemble.

Last month, Disney announced that Kit Connor — of Heartstopper fame — would play Cyclops in the new X-Men movie. This news had fans reeling, with many hoping that he would lean into the bisexual element of it all. Some even called for Cyclops to enter a polycule with two of the other beloved characters.

Elsewhere in his SFX interview, Mollica describes Tommy as “a grifter, he’s a small-time thief, he’s a bit of an artful dodger at the time, and he’s lost in his life. He’s looking for a purpose and he ends up on the road with Vision. And that’s probably all I can say for now.”

Much of the detail of VisionQuest is being kept under wraps, however, it was revealed that the show’s timeline takes place around the same time as Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ on October 14, with new episodes streaming weekly. Check out the trailer below.
