After years of news headlines suggesting that Marvel will introduce finally its first openly queer character, actor Ruaridh Mollica has high hopes.

Last week, VisionQuest had its much-anticipated series premiere on Disney+. In the first two episodes, viewers were introduced to Tommy Maximoff (played by Mollica), the son of Vision and Wanda Maximoff.
In the episode, We see that Tommy has romantic chemistry with Lisa Molinari, a pickpocket who becomes his partner in crime. While some fans are already shipping them, Mollica has suggested there are more dimensions to Tommy than meets the eye.
In a new interview for Variety, Mollica said he feels beautifully represented by his character.
“I feel like Marvel did a great job by casting a bisexual actor for this and it’s such an honor to be portraying that in the MCU,” said Mollica. “I feel so seen.”
In Agatha All Along, another Marvel series in the Wanda-Vision-Maximoff universe, fans were introduced to the teenage version Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke). Canonically, Locke and Mollica’s characters are twin brothers. Locke is openly gay, and previously starred in the queer coming-of-age series Heartstopper. Because of this, Mollica is over the moon at the fact that other queer actors are getting their shot too.
“These queer twin brothers in the MCU together … it’s so cool,” he said.
Mollica continued, noting that while fans have only currently seen him display romantic chemistry in a hetero-presenting dynamic, he insists that Tommy is canonically bisexual.
“He’s flirting with Lisa Molinari, but I think that makes me feel more seen as bisexual,” he said. “Because that’s the whole point. It’s not necessarily about who you’re dating, it’s about who you are inside, and who you want to flirt with. So I hope that me being bisexual and playing this part is good for people to feel seen and represented.”
Last month, Mollica spoke with SFX Magazine, claiming that he was unsure if Tommy would be portrayed as bi.
“I don’t know if it’s explicitly referenced,” Mollica said, “but I feel like myself as a bisexual actor embodying Tommy, hopefully that comes through in just personality and self and is something that can be explored in the future.”
But following the premiere, it looks like he’s confident that his vibrant, bisexual energy shines through Tommy’s personality. Perhaps will see more romance on Tommy’s part too!
