“To create art is my biggest passion.” Michael Heyns 1992

This quote is evident in the work of Michael Heyns, a full-time artist who has perfected a unique texture in his oil paintings that allows the viewer to interpret the work subjectively. His ability to portray the beauty of the human in nature spans over five decades.

As a student, Heyns was described by his lecturer of painting, Gunther van der Reis, as a “loner.” This description remained true throughout his career, as Heyns has always been focused on his art above all else.

In 1972, Heyns built a studio on his property, which still reflects his preference for beauty and serves as a reminder of all his life experiences.

Heyns’s work is not limited to oil painting. He is also a skilled sculptor who has created unique and innovative works in clay. He has overcome various technical challenges to mould thin slabs of clay into sculptures that have not been easily replicated in South Africa. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Heyns is no longer able to create these objects.

Heyns’s ability to tap into his right brain creativity has made him a unique and valuable addition to the South African art landscape. He refuses to be overwhelmed by the bitter rivalry and jealousy that can be common among art critics.

This Pretoria-based artist has exhibited in various cities and towns throughout South Africa throughout his career. His exhibitions are always well-planned and present a unique body of art. Heyns’s meticulous attention to space and focus of his work make these exhibition events truly memorable. In 2022, he exhibited in a multi-functional space in Midstream, where the three-dimensional presentation of canvases suspended from the balcony allowed visitors to interpret the simplistic but complex life of Michael Heyns.

Heyns’s work is a testament to his passion for art and his dedication to his craft. He is a unique and talented artist who has made a significant contribution to the South African art scene.

Heyns’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including Art South Africa, The Star, Beeld, Transvaler, Leef, The Pretoria News to mention a few. He was the first recipient of the new signatures award in 1967. This award was instituted by the South African Art Association division Northern Transvaal. On his 22nd birthday he opened his first solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Association.

His work is held in private and public collections in South Africa and around the world.
