We all struggle to get used to the record speed ever-evolving landscape of heavy electric vehicles (HEVs).

By Rubin van Niekerk

The Tank HEV 300 emerges with all the bells and whistles and goes anywhere you point its butch nose at, redefining the standards of power, efficiency, and sustainability. Frankly, with its cutting-edge technology and innovative design, the HEV 300 pleasantly surprised me in terms of performance and all-round capability in its class.
With only a two-litre engine supplemented by a hybrid battery it delivers 255kW and 648Nm of torque that unexpectedly rockets it like greased with far less body roll than expected. A state-of-the-art battery system ensures that HEV 300 offers impressive range and efficiency. Its lithium-ion battery pack boasts a capacity of 200kWh, providing power to all corners via a smooth 9-speed transmission. Built upon a tough chassis the Tank HEV 300 is designed to tackle the most demanding terrains with ease. Whether traversing rugged off-road trails or navigating urban landscapes, its robust construction ensures stability in all types of conditions. A comfortable suspension system enhances ride quality matched with unexpected dynamics to match the performance effortlessly. Superb technology enhances performance and provides an array of cutting-edge driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking, enhancing safety and peace of mind for both drivers and passengers. Acceleration from 0-100 in about 7,3 seconds and a top speed close to 200km/hour is extremely unusual in such a large SUV that has many features to allow it to conquer almost any terrain.
It’s impressive range, surpasses many of its competitors in the heavy electric vehicle segment, and driving from Johannesburg to Durban on a tank of fuel without stopping is great and allows a wide range of commercial applications, including freight transportation. The HEV 300 doesn’t compromise on safety or comfort, thanks to its advanced driver assistance systems and refined interior design. With features such as adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking, operators can enjoy peace of mind knowing that they’re protected by the latest safety technologies. A spacious cabin offers ample room for drivers and passengers alike, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride.
Our Chinese competitors may be homophobes, but they are exceptionally well priced and vastly improved from a few years ago which should worry our well established and overpriced brands who foolishly believe they can maintain market share without aggressive pricing, marketing campaigns and clever strategy. The Tank HEV 300 proves the potential of electric vehicles in the heavy-duty sector and with an unbelievable average fuel consumption of 8,6 litres in mostly urban driving which is well ahead of most of its competitors. Being perfectly named, it can go just about anywhere.
We had a chance to test the Tank’s ability to transport a large antique desk which posed no challenge at all. Neither does any manoeuvring or tiny turning circles for such a big SUV.
I highly recommend having a thorough look at this practical and charming car that will cost R851 950 which is still much less than its competitors.
