Everyone cheats and has been cheated on. I’ve cheated on so many people. When I was a teenager, after the freedom of 1968, I thought autonomy had something to do with romance and sex. I was very unfaithful.
[On the risks of publicly coming out in 1989] But I survived well: I gained more than I lost. If I had married my friend Michela in Rome, things would have been different. There’s a price to pay for everything.
The freedom I discovered in 1970s London was also experienced in Rome. I remember making love in the parks, at the Capitoline Hill, and even at the Colosseum, which I found open at night. Customs and traditions were widespread in the ancient world; I felt like an ancient Roman. I experienced the most unbridled freedom.
I was [fashion legend] Valentino’s guest at a big party. I remember the trapeze artists, the angels singing, the play of lights, the most exhilarating entertainment. I felt like I was at the circus with the gladiators. That party marked the end of an era.
