What’s your opinion on body hair?

GQ says that chest hair is back! But the question is, did it ever leave?

As Queerty‘s Johnny Lopez notes, gay men have had a long and varied history with body hair. In the ’70s, the “Castro Clone” aesthetic pushed a hyper-masc look hat involved snug Levis, tight T-shirts and plenty of mustaches and fur.

In the ’80s, gay men started to mimic the hairless bodybuilders of that era, partially as a reaction AIDS. Gay men wanted to accentuate their muscles and avoid appearing “unhealthy.”

This trend continued into the ’90s and even through the early 2000s, when so-called “metrosexuals” dotted nightclub floors. But over the last 15 years or so, many gays in big metros are embracing it all: mustaches, chest fur and bush!
