Ceramics Southern Africa joins the International Academy of Ceramics

A landmark achievement for South African ceramics on the global stage.

Ceramics Southern Africa (CSA) is proud to announce its acceptance as an Affiliate Member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), one of the world’s most respected and influential organisations dedicated to the advancement of ceramic art and culture.

Founded in 1952 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Academy of Ceramics is an international non-governmental organisation in official partnership with UNESCO. With more than 1,200 members representing nearly 90 countries, the IAC serves as the leading global network for artists, institutions, museums, educators and organisations committed to excellence in ceramics. Its mission is to promote international dialogue, collaboration and innovation while preserving the rich cultural heritage of ceramics worldwide.

Acceptance into the IAC is a significant honour and follows a rigorous application and evaluation process. Affiliate organisations are required to submit comprehensive evidence of their professional activities, governance, programmes and contributions to the field of ceramics, together with recommendations from existing IAC members. Applications are reviewed by the IAC Council against established international selection criteria before membership is awarded.

This milestone places Ceramics Southern Africa among a distinguished international community committed to advancing ceramic practice, research, education and cultural exchange.

South Africa is currently represented by 16 members within the International Academy of Ceramics. While not all of these members belong to Ceramics Southern Africa, CSA celebrates and supports every South African represented within the Academy. Their collective achievement reflects the strength, diversity and growing international recognition of South African ceramics.

The official Certificate of Membership was received on behalf of Ceramics Southern Africa by CSA Gauteng Chairwoman, Nonhle Nkosi, marking an important milestone for the organisation and reinforcing its commitment to strengthening South Africa’s presence within the global ceramics community.

As an Affiliate Member of the International Academy of Ceramics, Ceramics Southern Africa looks forward to fostering stronger international partnerships, expanding opportunities for South African ceramic artists, encouraging professional exchange, and contributing to global conversations that shape the future of contemporary ceramics.

For more than ninety years, Ceramics Southern Africa has championed ceramic excellence through exhibitions, education, workshops, professional development and community engagement. Membership of the International Academy of Ceramics represents an important step in further connecting South African ceramic artists with the international community while continuing to nurture creativity and excellence at home.
