A humbling experience for the modest-motorist, a baby Jag, and not just any baby Jag, the Jaguar E-Pace D200. Jaguar’s smallest SUV on offer, but don’t let the size fool you, it would win the heart of even the bulgiest of daddies.

The 2-litre turbo diesel pebble pusher produces a satisfying 147kW and 430Nm of torque, so it is well catered to when you extend the accelerator pedal, coupled with the 9-speed automatic transmission, the E-Pace is true to its suggestive name. Accelerating from a stand-still to 100km/h in just 8.4 seconds, the E-Pace caters to convenience and comfort while delivering frugal fuel consumption of around 8 litres per 100kms under enthusiastic conditions. The somewhat seamless gearbox allows you to arrive rather than accelerate, a regal kitten with gracious execution.

The highlight of every Jaguar for me is the interior build quality, a plush and noise repellent cabin allows for serenity, calmness and peace of mind. Okay, this sounds like an advert for a yoga tent, but it is not. The combination of the practical size, capable engine and plush comfort has won my heart over, calmed it down to a mild murmur, smacked me on the ass and said “everything is great”.

This car calmed my racing heart with build quality confidence and supple road comfort, a practical tool for the stressed-out modern-day corporate climber, starting from R850 000 it may bend the budget, but the bonus is the value saved on therapy and medicinal marijuana through its reliable and reassuring nature.

Contenders to consider for the E-Pace would be the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40.
